The City of Toronto’s 2007 Capital budget process will soon get underway and TCAT is calling on the members of the Budget Committee to ensure that the budget related items from the Toronto Coalition for Active Transportation (TCAT) platform will be approved by City Council. Organizations and individuals who are TCAT supporters can help ensure that happens by getting involved in the budget process. You can make in person or written deputations to the Budget Committee and contact the members of the Budget Committee by phone, letter and e-mail letting them know how important it is that they keep their promises to support Active Transportation.
TCAT is calling on the Councillors on the Budget Committee to support the following items in the Capital Budget.
Transportation Services Division

• Increase the Cycling infrastructure budget to $6.0 million to build 35 kms of bike lanes and paths.

• Increase staffing levels to the level needed to implement the planned cycling infrastructure projects.

• Increase funding of the Transportation Services Division “Missing Sidewalk” program to keep up with inflation.

•Fully fund the Crosswalk Improvement Program agreed to by Council in 2006 by including $3.63 million in the 2007 budget to improve the safety of crosswalks on major arterial roads.

Parks Forestry and Recreation Division

•Increase the budgets for building and upgrading paths and trails in Toronto’s parks to $1.5 million for 8 km of new and upgraded paths.

There will be two opportunities for the organizations and the general public to make deputations to advocate for cycling and pedestrian projects in the Capital budget: February 9th, 2007 starting at 9:30 am will be the date for stakeholder groups and organizations to make deputations, February 14th, 2007 starting at 2:00 pm will be the date for deputations from the general public.
