It should also be second nature to think about pedestrians and cyclists in routine city maintenance and other operations. In 2005 the Toronto Cycling Committee requested that the City prioritize snow clearing on streets with high cyclist volumes. It would also make sense to prioritize repairs to the road surface on streets that have a high number of cyclists. A pot hole is bad enough in a car, but for a cyclist it can be a cause of injury or worse!

 

Meanwhile, basic sidewalk maintenance has been subject to budget cuts and has fallen far behind schedule, making walking on city sidewalks unpleasant and hazardous, especially to citizens with reduced mobility. The city needs to eliminate the sidewalk maintenance backlog and make sure sidewalks are kept in a state of good repair.
