TCAT Steering Committee
TCAT is directed by a Steering Committee of eight people. Steering Committee members were chosen at the February 22, 2007,
meeting of representatives of TCAT member agencies. A brief bio of each of the current Steering Committee members is included
below.
 
Desmond Cole
Desmond Cole is the Advanced Peer Educator at YOUTHLINK Inner City, a drop-in resource centre for street youth. He has advocated for many different active transportation issues, especially as a candidate for Toronto City Council during the 2006 municipal election.
 
Jennifer Niece
An avid cyclist for over 8 years, Jennifer Niece has been an "active commuter" in Ottawa, Vancouver and Toronto. She holds a Master's Degree in Urban Planning, with studies focusing on sustainable transportation and, in particular, how streetscape features influence whether or not children will walk to school. Jennifer works professionally for Smart Commute - North Toronto, Vaughan which partners with workplaces to promote the use of cycling, walking, public transit, and carpooling for getting to work.
 
Michael Canzi
Michael Canzi is a graduate of the Masters program in Planning at the University of Toronto, and is currently employed as Manager of Government Programs at the Clean Air Partnership. He has a decade of experience in the transportation sector, both as an employee of the transit industry and as a volunteer on various municipal advisory committees and citizen groups.
 
Nancy Smith Lea
Nancy Smith Lea is a senior research officer at the University of Toronto and holds a M.A. in sociology and equity studies from OISE/UT (thesis title “Cycling Safety: Shifting from an Individual to a Social Responsibility Model”). She was a member of the committee formed by the Regional Coroner of Toronto to prepare recommendations for reducing cycling injuries and death; a co-founder of Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists; and a board director of the Community Bicycle Network.
 
Raj Bharati
Raj Bharati practices environmental law at Willms & Shier LLP, and has a background in environmental engineering.  He is an active member of the Toronto Public Space Committee and has volunteered at environmental non-profits.
 
Rebekah McGurran
Rebekah McGurran holds a Masters in Environmental Studies and Urban Planning. Rebekah is currently an Environmental Coordinator for a GTA municipality and formerly worked with a non-profit transportation demand management association in Toronto. As a resident of the City of Toronto and an active cyclist, Rebekah has extensive experience with sustainable transportation and advocacy.

Fred Sztabinski
Fred Sztabinski is Project Coordinator for TCAT and reports to the Steering Committee.  Fred recently completed the Masters program in Planning at the University of Toronto. His Master’s research project, which focused on developing a provincial policy to support the planning and construction of active transportation infrastructure, received the Canadian Institute of Planners 2007 President’s Scholarship for the most outstanding research submission.  Fred’s previous work experience, including time spent with the provincial government, the transit industry, and a transportation demand management association, has consistently aimed at raising the profile of more sustainable modes of transportation and promoting travel choice alternatives to the private car.
