3. Trails for Active Transportation - Opportunity for Community Partners

Walk and Bike for Life is a TCAT Supporter. They are just getting started on a unique project to assist communities across Ontario in developing more active transportation options.

Walk & Bike for Life is a non-profit organization based in Port Credit, Ontario, with a mission to promote walking and cycling as a recreational activity and as a healthier, more sustainable mode of transportation.

Our organization is in the process of choosing 10 pilot communities for our Trails for Active Transportation Project (TFAT), a project made possible by funding from the Ministry of Health Promotion’s Trails for Life grant. The TFAT project involves the development and implementation of a series of public meetings, workshops, and follow-up resources in 10 communities located along the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail or in communities that have existing trail systems. The workshops will cover issues such as trail connectivity, trail accessibility and the integration of trails with community life. In larger municipalities such as Toronto, Walk & Bike for Life is looking to focus on 2-3 neighbourhoods that could benefit from this process.

Gil Penalosa, an internationally renowned walking and cycling expert, and Executive Director of Walk & Bike for Life, will be facilitating the workshops across the province. Each community that signs on will receive a 1 hour presentation from Penalosa, a 3-4 hour workshop tailored to the needs of that specific community, and a written report in the form of a Community Action Plan that reflects the short-term and long-term actions needed to make walking and cycling a priority in their community. The goal of the TFAT project is to create a process for communities to form Community Action Groups that can advocate for improved pedestrian and cycling facilities in the long-term, with on-going support from Walk & Bike for Life.

The total estimated value of the services provided by the TFAT project to each community is $10,000. This includes pre-workshop research, the presentation, the workshop, the development and distribution of the Community Action Plans, as well as the on-going support provided to Community Action Groups. To be one of the 10 pilot project communities, Walk & Bike for Life is asking for a commitment of $1,500 (15% of the cost) from each community. The remaining cost is covered by Walk& Bike for Life as part of their commitment to the program (25%) and the grants from the Ministry of Health Promotion (60%). Our organization’s priority is to work with enthusiastic communities, and facilitate an engagement process that remains sustainable in the long term. We will work in collaboration with the community so that cost is not a barrier to participation.

We will be choosing the list of 10 communities by the end of September. We encourage all community groups and interested partners to contact us if they are interested in collaborating to organize a workshop and develop an action plan for their community.
