York Street Pedestrian Promenade - Report goes to committee

At it's meeting this morning Toronto and East York Community Council approved (with amendment) the proposed pedestrian improvements on York Street
from Front Street West to Queens Quay West, to substantially enhance
the pedestrian environment and safety in this rapidly urbanizing
corridor linking the downtown and waterfront.

Bloor Street Corridor Visioning Study - Meeting tonight, December 17

Apologies for the short notice - this just came to TCAT's attention.
[In the future, if you know of an important public meeting please send
us a message as early as possible so that we can let all of TCAT's
supporters know about it in advance]

Earlier this year the City of Toronto embarked on a study to
develop a planning vision for the future development of Bloor Street
West, between Avenue Road and Bathurst Street.

Bikes 2 Power The Lights - WE'LOBike Fundraiser, May 24

Making Things Better Productions is throwing a concert to raise money
to buy exercise bikes from WE'LOBike, a non-profit organization that
retrofits used exercise bikes so they can produce energy for lighting
systems. These fundraised bikes will find a home in the Annex at the
Karma Co-op, a community foodstore and local environmentally-aware
watering hole.

Martin Goodman Trail Redesign at Ontario Place - Open House June 26

The transformation of the Martin Goodman Trail at Ontario
Place will consist of extending the trail from Marilyn Bell Park to the
existing trail within Coronation Park at Strachan Avenue.

Bloor Corridor Visioning Study - Final report released

One of the above-mentioned projects for which TCAT has been awarded
funding is a study looking at the impact on business resulting from the
removal of on-street parking in order to install bike lanes. The study
area is the Annex section of Bloor Street, between Spadina and
Bathurst. The findings from this report should be published by the end
of 2008 and will be of significant interest to City staff working on
the Bloor Corridor Visioning Study. This study was mostly completed in
2007, but the final report was just recently released (thanks to one

Public Bikes in Toronto - Bixi demo event, October 24

Following-up on our successful event in September, Bikes as a Public Good: What is the future of public bikes in Toronto?, Torontonians will get a real live feel for what public bikes might look like on our city streets. The recently launched Bixi system in Montreal will be demonstrating their platform station and specially designed bikes this Friday.

Fort York Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge - EA study gets underway

As reported in TCAT News
the City is planning to build an active transportation connection into
Fort York over the railway tracks. According to the notice, "The
Fort York Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge is intended to provide a link
between Stanley Park to the north and the western area of Fort York
grounds to the south, improving the connections between the City, Fort
York and the waterfront."

Queens Quay Revitalization Public Meeting: Dec 8

Waterfront Toronto in partnership with the City of Toronto is currently
undertaking an environmental assessment for the revitalization of
Queens Quay Boulevard from Lower Spadina Avenue to Lower Jarvis Street.
This study is exploring how to implement long standing City policy
objectives including revitalizing Queens Quay into a scenic waterfront
drive and completing the Martin Goodman Trail which today is absent
through the central waterfront.

TCAT welcomes the Centre for City Ecology,
the most recent organization to join our growing list of supporters.
The Centre for City Ecology is the brainchild behind the fabulous
Jane's Walk that takes place each year in Toronto and other cities
across Canada. Inspired by urban activist Jane Jacobs and her
grassroots approach to city-building, the walks bring people together
across geographic and social barriers for a series of free
neighbourhood walking tours.

New Report Shows Bike Lanes are Good for Business!

The Clean Air Partnership is pleased to announce the publication of a research report titled Bike Lanes, On-Street Parking and Business.
Contrary to common public perception, the evidence shows that removing
on-street parking to install a bicycle lane or widened sidewalk would
likely increase not decrease commercial activity. "This report should

Walk & Bike for Life brings Janette Sadik-Khan to Ontario: April 22

The Canadian Urban Institute, in collaboration with Walk & Bike for Life, presents a special Urban Leadership Luncheon Session: Mobility at the Human Scale: Planning for Active Transportation. Janette Sadik-Khan is making walking, cycling, and public transportation serious priorities for New York City. In office since 2007, Sadik-Khan has already graced New York City's streets with pedestrian plazas, physically separated bicycle lanes, and dedicated bus lanes, as well as organizing the wildly successful car free “Summer Streets” program.

Queen's Quay Revitalization Public Meeting: March 25

Waterfront Toronto, TTC and the City of Toronto have undertaken comprehensive Environmental Assessments to revitalize Queen's Quay from Parliament Street to Lower Spadina Avenue which includes completing the Martin Goodman Trail through the central waterfront. At tonight's public meeting the plans of the recommended preferred designs will be on display and team members will be available for one-on-one discussions.

Martin Goodman Trail Redesign: Comment by April 17

Waterfront Toronto recently held public consultations to reveal the plans for the redesign of Queen's Quay. What is particularly exciting is that the plans call for two traffic lanes to be removed and to be replaced by wide pedestrian boulevards and a continuous off-street Martin Goodman Trail, completing the Lake Ontario Trail.

Converting Richmond and Adelaide to two-way streets: TCAT in the news!

TCAT responded to media inquiries this week about Councillor Adam Vaughan's proposal to convert Richmond and Adelaide Streets from one-way to two-way streets. The proposal has the goal of improving both the livability and commercial function of these streets which is currently negatively impacted by the fast-moving traffic.

Bikechain is hiring - July 17

Bikechain is a free, full-service educational bicycle repair facility for University of Toronto students which also hosts bicycle-related seminars and events. TCAT hosts sceening of Veer - Aug 27

The Toronto Coalition for Active Transportation is pleased to present Veer, a full-length documentary on community based cycling activism through five main protagonists. The film will be screened on Thursday, August 27th at 8 PM at CineCycle (401 Richmond Street, coach house). Tickets are $8 and there will be drinks and espresso available at the bar.

Complete Streets Meeting - Sep 28

The next meeting to plan TCAT's Complete Streets Campaign is on Monday, September 28th at 7pm, Metro Hall, 55 John St., Rm 316.

Toronto Cyclists Union Fundraiser: Cocktail and Masquerade - Oct 28

TCAT has worked closely with the Toronto Cyclists Union since it launched last year, helping to build support for this exciting new organization. We are impressed by the excellent job the Toronto Cyclists Union is doing to represent cyclists both in the media and through their advocacy campaigns. They are growing fast but need help to maintain their growth. This upcoming fundraiser is a fun and visible opportunity to show support.
