Chief Coroner of Ontario Feedback regarding Review of Cycling Deaths
On October 24, 2011, the Chief Coroner of Ontario announced it will be conducting an investigation to review cycling deaths in Ontario. The review will be led by Dr. Dan Cass, Regional Supervising Coroner - Toronto West Region, and will include deaths from 2006 to 2010. The purpose of the review is to identify common factors that may have played a role in the deaths, and where possible, to make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
In response to a call for public feedback, the attached letter was sent to Dr. Cass on Nov 16, 2011 from a team of researchers in the fields of public health, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, law, engineering and transportation. The team has been conducting a research study titled Cycling in Cities of cycling injuries in Toronto and Vancouver. TCAT is one of the NGO partners on the research team and TCAT Director Nancy Smith Lea was a signatory on the BICE letter and sent a follow-up email as well.
