Complete Streets - Building Momentum

Enthusiasm and participation in TCAT and the Toronto Cyclists Union Complete Streets campaign continues to grow! The most recent version of The Strand published a great article about us last week that you can check out here.

Last weekend, Nancy Smith Lea, TCAT's Program Director led two sessions at BikeCamp. One of these was resulted in productive brainstorming about how to get a complete streets policy in Toronto.

Our goal -- that routine accommodation of walking and bicycling in street design be a requirement, not an option is shared by the province’s independent environmental watchdog. Gord Miller, Ontario's environmental commissioner, recently released a report criticizing Toronto over its lack of bike lanes on Bloor Street. In this report Miller is quoted as saying: "There should be a mandatory requirement," said Miller "[that] in future in these kinds of projects that cycling and pedestrians — as legitimate forms of transportation — be included in the consideration and the alternatives in discussion and design."

We are working to build a diverse coalition to push for a Complete Streets Policy. If you would like to help out with this initiative, please send an email to be added to our contact list.
